WRITING SCI-FI THAT FEELS BELIEVABLE

Now, I am not an expert or scientist, by any means. I had to learn a lot about writing sci-fi through trial and error. But I had some excellent help to get me where I am today, and I’m happy to share what I’ve learned!
Believable fake science lies in known science and consistency.
- Known Science
Even if the particular science you write is completely made up from your own head, it still has to follow the known scientific rules. Physics still applies, even if floating in space. Gravity still makes you fall down. You’ve got to do your research.
There are some exceptions, but if you are going to break known science, you have to give a good reason why.
- Consistency
You have to create the rules for your science, and then stick with them. Take time travel. There are a lot of options to choose from with this trope. Are there limits to how long someone can travel out of their own time? Can they get back to their original time? Can they travel to the past, or future, or both? Can they cross their own timeline? Does time move forward as they are in the past (or future), or can they get back to the exact time they left?
Once you’ve decided what rules work best in your universe, make sure you stay consistent. If you start breaking your own rules, you’ve shattered any believability you had. Not only will your readers be confused, they’ll get upset.
There is, of course, much more to writing believable sci-fi, but those are the two biggest rules of thumb I’ve come across so far.
