RYAN OUELLETTE | AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Howdy, what’s this? Two author interviews in a month? I’m super excited to introduce Ryan Ouellette! Let’s jump right into today’s author interview!

RYAN OUELLETTE INTERVIEW

What have you published?

I’ve published three pieces of flash fiction with Havok Publishing. (They’re amazing btw, go check them out 😉 )

What are you currently working on?

I’m currently in the middle of writing a flash piece for Havok with my own take on color magic. The main character, Tyrian, maps rainbows and travels to the end of one to discover something hopefully extraordinary. It would be fun to throw in some greedy leprechauns, but I’m not quite sure which direction I’m going with the story yet.

What is your favorite genre to write?

Science fantasy. I love to mix magic and technology and see what happens. Since I’m focusing on flash fiction right now, most of my pieces are just fantasy because the science element isn’t crucial to the story, just the larger world. “Storm of Light” is my only published piece so far that’s science fantasy. I had a lot of fun writing that one.

What is the most difficult part of your writing process? What is your favorite part of your writing process?

I’m supposed to have a writing process? Just kidding, my process is simple. I come up with enough of an idea to pants a story, and I start writing. From there, I figure out a start through trial and error, and then from there it’s out of my hands. The characters do what they’re gonna do.

When did you start writing?

I started seriously writing in July 2015. Before that I just roleplayed on Google+ and tested out some story ideas before I landed on one that I vowed to publish someday. I never gave up, though my dream did evolve in ways I never imagined. I’ve had a heck of a creative journey since then–and I’m just getting started. 🙂

If you could spend a day with another popular author, whom would you choose?

Well, it depends on who you see as popular. I’m not a big fan of any generally popular authors (though I have enjoyed some of their work). However, I am a big fan of quite a few authors that are popular within the Realm Makers community. I think my favorite is Morgan L. Busse, but the thought of spending a day with her scares me as an introvert.

It sounds awesome, but scary. I think I would pass and settle for getting my copies of her books signed and e-mailing her some fanfiction for the Ravenwood Saga…once I actually write it. I might beg her to resume that series too, since it’s my #1 favorite.

Are there any books or authors that inspired you to become a writer?

No one in particular, actually. Though I’ve grown up loving books and reading. I devoured books faster than Thanos can snap his fingers, once upon a time. I think what inspired me the most was actually DC and Marvel. I grew up with a lot of those characters and their themes always resonated with me. So when I started writing, my concepts became superhero-esque concepts.

Share something your readers wouldn’t know about you!

I’m a huge fan of the Zack Snyder’s work with DC–his true work, which excludes BvS and Justice League’s theatrical versions because the studio interfered with those. BvS: Ultimate Edition is amazing I absolutely can’t wait for the Snyder Cut to come out.

Can readers expect any new works from you soon?

I don’t know, honestly. I don’t regularly put out new works, unfortunately, but I’m hoping to get something published with Havok soon. However, I do have a Discord where I try to keep people updated on what I’m doing. Should be linked somewhere on this post, so you can go find it if it interests you.

What book are you currently reading?

Winter, White, and Wicked by Shannon Dittemore! It’s not my favorite, but it’s super interesting. I need to keep a more steady pace through it but I’ve been lacking energy to read unfortunately.
