This post is about how Chronic Illness impacted my family. My mother has been ill the whole time I wrote Seek, so sitting down and addressing what it has been like… Wow. Thanks so much for this chance to speak on your blog, Sara. It meant a lot to me. ♥

 

FORGIVENESS

 

Today’s theme is about forgiveness. It is something God taught me and helped me learn as I wrote Seek. 

And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses. – Mark 11:25-26

I knew I had to forgive my adopted sister when she left, even though at first, I felt numb, like something was wrong with me because I wasn’t reacting. I was scared of how quiet I was, instead of being furious or crying all the time from grief. Because I was scared, I clung to God. I prayed constantly. As time wore on and God placed Seek on my heart, my healing began. I was overjoyed! Not only was I feeling something, but I was feeling joy in Jesus! I hadn’t been sure I’d ever find joy again.

While I wrote, God showed me that I would have to forgive my sister for what she had done. I was eager to understand what forgiving was, since I had never had to forgive something quite so huge before. I looked in the Bible, talked to my family, prayed with my best friend.

I knew that forgiving my sister, who hated me and showed no signs of repenting, wouldn’t be easy. I had lost someone dear to me, even if she had manipulated me to the point that I doubted our sisterhood had ever been real. I didn’t want to carry those weights. I wanted to be free. I wanted to forgive her. But what did forgiveness look like?

Many Christians will view forgiveness as repairing the relationship. God never says this. God never says we must give our trust or heart back to the person who wounded us. He says forgive seventy times seven times, but does this mean we must become a foot mat for people to walk all over and destroy? No! God does not want this from us. He actually says, “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14), “Depart from me, ye evildoers: for I will keep the commandments of my God.” (Psalms 119:115), and lastly, “I do not sit with the deceitful, nor do I associate with hypocrites. I abhor the assembly of evildoers and refuse to sit with the wicked.” – Psalms 26:4-5 Obviously, we can forgive without justifying a person’s sins or remaining close to them!

God tells us to forgive so that we may find peace in Him. When we forgive others, we accept God’s mercy. We surrender to God and let Him break our bonds to those who hurt us. When we fin peace in Jesus, we can pray for the ones who hate us without being bound to them, which is what God wants us to do. (Matthew 5:44) Is forgiving easy? No. Is it fast? Not always. Every journey in this life with the Lord is different. But if we hold a grudge, or cling to resentment, bitterness, hate, or anger, we cannot cling to the Lord.

This is what I learned as I wrote Seek and forgave my sister. I share this with you to encourage you that no matter what pain people have caused us, God is Greater. God loves us. He has given us each a story to share. I look forward to what lessons God has in store for me as I continue writing the Whispers Of Heaven!
