ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Chad Pettit grew up in Oregon with books and mountains to help his imagination grow. After high school, he spent ten years in the Army, travelling and deploying all over the world, including two combat tours in Iraq. After the military, Chad earned a Bachelor of Arts from Texas A&M University-Central Texas, and then he started teaching English at an early college high school in central Texas. Chad currently serves in a local church as a deacon and the Sunday school superintendent.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

 

What inspired you to write Fate of the Watchman, and in what way was this inspiration different from previous projects?

It’s actually difficult to talk about. I am, like many people, prone to apathy. I get so caught up in my own life that I fail to see the needs of others. I had also fallen into a rut of “punch the clock Christianity.” I was showing up, but I wasn’t living the life. I decided to write a story about a guy that had gone to the extremes of this, and it fit well with a short story idea I wrote in high school about time stopping for all but one man.

As far as being different than my other projects, I don’t know that it is. I write from a place of pain that has been healed, that vulnerable spot that taps into things I’ve been through. I express these experiences through extremes, but my heart is woven into every bit of what I write.

What spiritual lessons did God teach you while writing Fate of the Watchman?

I think it’s more of a better understanding of truths I already knew but needed to connect with on a more personal level. Reflecting on the story, I have been thinking lately about Jesus looking out over the multitude and having compassion on them (Matthew 9:36). He wanted to serve them because he was touched with the feeling of their infirmities (Hebrews 4:15). I also learned that prayer is valuable, yet we often put little value in it.

What supernatural Biblical references did you find most helpful when writing this novella?

This book and the next are strongly influenced by the riders in Zechariah that have been “sent to walk to and fro through the earth” (1:10). I have always thought of these as a watcher caste of angels, and I believe they may still be among us.

Was it difficult writing the main character of Lester Sharp?

Very. It took a long time, and he went through a lot of changes over the past five years. I wanted a character who would deliver the message without being didactic, but exploring his character was challenging to my own.

What do you pray your readers will walk away with upon reading your book?

I pray that hearts are burdened for others, but I also hope it is a unique burden for every reader. What I’ve tried to do with this book is point to many needs and allow each person to be impacted in his or her own way. We can’t all go to the same places and minister to the same people. For me it was doing more to help persecuted Christians, which is part of the reason I’m donating 50% of my royalties to Voice of the Martyrs.
